The discussion must go about: What can we do, to prevent school violence?

Schools are public buildings where people can learn subjects, they also exchange their point of views on those subjects. You need a good education for good jobs. Without school you go almost nowhere. So we think that the schools must be save for their students and teachers. Nowadays, the students are more aggressive then in the past and there is a lot of other violence. In the Netherlands we had a couple of situations on school with violence:

An example of those situations is the incident of Hans van Wieren. On January 13th, a view minutes past 1, he was shot in his head by Murat, a student at the school. In the hospital in ‘Den Haag’ he died around 10 o’clock. Hans van Wieren should had a conversation with Murats mother on January 14th about her sons behaviour. Hans van Wieren wanted to suspend the student because of this.
In the night of the shooting, Murat turned himself in at the police-department. A view days later, he confessed that he murdered the teacher. He also told that he took his gun to school more often, because it made him feel saver. On the 29th of April, Murat was condemned for five years prison with psychological help. Usually because of his age, he would be treated as a juvenile, but in this case he was punished as an adult.

Another example in America what gave a big impact on society all around the world:

A Chinese student has killed thirty-three people at the technical university of Virginia. The killer has committed suicide. This isn’t the first shoot indecent in de United States. The most terrible until this day was in 1966 at the university of Texas. Charles Whitman killed there his parents and the next day he killed fourteen people in the university. He also wounded thirty-one people. On the Colombine High school in Colorado killed two students in 1999 twelve other students and their teacher. After that the two also committed suicide.

This examples was enough for us to think about violence and security in and around school. Are we save at our school? How can we improve the security at schools?

Here are a couple safety measures:

• More surveillance. If something happens the surveillance can control the situation fast. In Virginia the police reacted very slow and the arrested the wrong person, this gave the killer the opportunity to kill more people.



• Metal detecting portals. It keeps metal things outside the building, like weapons. The chance that something can kill somebody is degreased.



• Keep up a file of every student t, if you see hat he misbehaves warn him and after 3 warnings you suspend him. You keep the school clean on this way.



• Train people for what can happen. If some student is wounded or not well, take care that there are people with first-aid knowledge so they know what to do to save lives.



• Make a clear list of punishments when you break the rules and send it out to the students with misbehaviour.



• These are a couple of examples, it’s up to you guys to consider other measures and discuss about it.
